Two words carry this whole capability, and they're easy to blur together — here's precisely what each means.
Adaptive Designs and Design Groups Explained
Adaptive designs is the capability that lets a Meta ad pin your creative by name; a design group is the named creative concept it pins. Two words, defined precisely.

Adaptive designs#
Adaptive designs is a capability you switch on for a Meta channel. It gives your channel's designs names, so a catalog ad can pin one by name instead of by position.
The word adaptive is about what the name buys you. A position pin — "always show image number 2" — is absolute: Meta shows exactly that image on every surface, letterboxing a square design into a tall placement and cropping a tall one into a feed. A name can belong to several images of different shapes, so Meta stays free to pick the one that fits where the ad is running. You keep the design; Meta adapts the shape.
It's Meta-only, opt-in, and set up in the Adaptive designs dialog on a channel's Fields tab. Turning it on converts the channel's flat image fields into design blocks, in the same order, so ads already pinned by position keep showing the same design.
Meta is deprecating position selection in its own docs — "legacy image selections, such as by index, are discouraged and will be eventually removed" — with no date given. Adaptive designs is how a channel stops depending on it.
Design group#
A design group is a named creative concept — black-friday, evergreen — and it is the unit an
ad pins to. Inside it sits one design per shape.
Grouping matters because the group is what makes shape adaptation possible: pinning an ad to a single design would put you back to pinning one shape, which is what pinning by name exists to avoid.
- The first group is the base group, shown as Default designs. It's what ads show when nothing is pinned, and the only group carrying Meta's own reserved markers.
- Every group added afterwards has its image designs appear only on ads you deliberately pin to it, so adding one never changes the image a running ad shows. Its video designs are broader: they're the product's videos, so any ad with Dynamic Media on can draw on them, pinned or not.
- A group can carry video designs alongside its image designs. Meta chooses image or video per impression through its Dynamic Media feature — they're two facets of one concept, not two things to choose between.
- A group is prefilled from one Studio template, not welded to it. Each design inside it can be pointed at a different template on its own — one shape at a time, from the pencil on that design's cell in the dialog's grid — so a group can render its Story from one template and its Square from another.
